Food Access

Bread of Life Community Kitchen

Bread of Life is the only kitchen in the High Country serving 3-meals-a-day, 7-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year.

Meals are provided to all residents and any community members at no charge. The meals are managed by our food service coordinator and prepared by churches, civic organizations, and volunteers.

Our kitchen is stocked primarily (95%) through donations from community food drives, individual donors, Feeding America, and Food Lion in Blowing Rock. Currently we are averaging 12,500 + meals a month served.

Meals are available everyday:

Breakfast:         6:30 a.m. -   8:30 a.m.

Lunch:              11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Dinner:             5:30 p.m. -   6:30 p.m.

Food Pantry

Stocked with food from the Second Harvest Food Bank, a division of Feeding America, our Organic Gardens, the Watauga Foodshare Donation Station at the Watauga County Farmer's Market; as well as food from High Country Food Hub, F.A.R.M. Full Circle, Food Lion, Publix, Harris Teeter, Lowe's Foods, Stick Boy Bread Company, our Food Pantry is open SEVEN DAYS A WEEK.

The Food Pantry, available to anyone in our region who qualifies for low-income assistance, is Bodega Style (aka client choice) - meaning you shop for what you desire. Households are eligible to shop two times per month. We work hard to extend the length of a food box from 3.5 days to at least 6 days per household.

Remote Food Lockers

Hospitality House of Northwest N.C. and Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina have launched an automated food locker program at Bethel Elementary School in partnership Watauga County Schools.

This new pickup method will be used for food assistance programs as well as broader community applications like farmers markets and paid pick-up orders.

Food locker orders include approximately 25 pounds of items, including fresh produce sourced from local farms and High Country Food Hub, non-perishable staple items, frozen meat, prepared meals, dairy products, and other healthy food.

Hospitality House Local Food Coordinator contacts enrolled households every other Monday so that the client can place their order. Currently, deliveries are made on Thursdays and Sundays.
