In 2022, Hospitality House served nearly 160,000 meals from our Community Kitchen and distributed over 100,000 lbs. of meat, dairy, dry goods, and produce through our Food Pantry and Remote Food Lockers. Those are record-breaking numbers for us. However, so are our associated food costs which continue at an increase of 179% over the most recent pre-pandemic year.
Additionally, Second Harvest Food Bank, our primary source of food – ordered at $0.19 per pound – continues to face supply-chain and procurement issues. This is an additional strain on our resources and means that we must purchase food from wholesale distributors like US Foods and Sysco, something that we had never done prior to COVID-19.
Prior to the pandemic we were averaging 12,000 meals per month served at a cost of $0.12 per meal. Last year we averaged 13,322 meals per month at a cost of $0.34 per meal, that's over $4,500 each month, instead of the $1,440 per month normally budgeted.
